Add transparency to running programs in Windows XP/2000

Windows Admin No Comments »

Sometimes I like to keep an eye on the performance of one of my servers but don’t like having to minimize and maximize SSH because of working in other programs.

Now thanks to Froost, that’s no longer an issue. The install file is only 55k. The first time you install it, you’ll need to manually start it or reboot.

While Froost is running, you’ll see the little trash can like icon in your system tray (notification area). Double click the icon to customize your running programs.

Simply select the running program from the list and check “Enable Transparency” this will allow you to use the slider control to adjust the transparency level.

In this case, I’ve found 62% to be a good level to keep my SSH window readable but also ignorable if I open a new behind it.

Uptime for Windows

Windows Admin No Comments »

One of my webservers was rebooted over the weekend by the ISP to install Windows Updates. Just to verify when I got back into the office that it had been rebooted, I used this handly little trick to check the uptime of the server. This works on Win NT and up and if you have console (or Terminal Services) access.

Start -> Run -> cmd [enter]

net statistics server | more [enter]

The second line of the output will display the date and time the computer was restarted.

 Enjoy!
